Ben Hill Griffin Stadium – design description
The renovation of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville is set to become the most expensive in college football history, with an estimated cost of $1.45 billion. This would surpass, among others, the redevelopment of the Jacksonville Jaguars' stadium, which is set to receive a full canopy covering both the stands and the playing field.
The changes planned for the Florida Gators' venue will not be as extensive. On the contrary, the stadium is expected to retain as much of its existing character, distinctive appearance, and intense atmosphere as possible.
One of the most noticeable changes will be the addition of premium suites above the regular seating. New suites will be built on the east and south sides, complementing the existing ones on the west side. The new suites will feature a more open design, without glass-fronted walls.
The expansion of the premium areas will require larger structures around the stands, giving the stadium a more attractive and unified exterior appearance, highlighted by its distinctive brick walls. Exterior improvements are also planned for the north side, despite no additional suites being proposed there.
The project will also include a comprehensive modernization of the existing infrastructure, accessibility improvements, reconfiguration of seating areas to comply with updated regulations, an increase in the number of concession stands and restrooms, the installation of the latest technologies, and the addition of new, larger video boards.
The stadium is expected to maintain its current capacity of approximately 88,000 seats, preserving its status as the largest stadium in Florida and one of the largest stadiums in the world.
Information about plans for a major renovation of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium first emerged in 2017, with momentum building significantly in 2023. On June 11, 2026, details of the project were unveiled for the first time.
The investment is expected to be financed through a combination of University of Florida capital reserves, long-term debt, and private donations. The university's Board of Trustees is scheduled to make a final decision on the project in September 2026.
The plan calls for construction to begin after the 2026 season and be completed before the start of the 2030 season, when Ben Hill Griffin Stadium will celebrate its centennial. Florida Gators games are expected to continue being played at the stadium throughout the construction period.
