Stadion Miejski im. Henryka Reymana – design description
Why is a modernisation of the recently rebuilt Stadion Miejski in Krakow necessary?
After the redevelopment of Stadion Miejski was completed in 2012, the facility had a reputation for being unpolished, inconsistent and unsightly, hence the almost immediate call for additional works to improve its aesthetics. Initially, in addition to financial issues, the matter of settling the copyright of the design, which the city only finally purchased in 2020, stood in the way.
Who will pay for the modernisation of Stadion im. Henryka Reymana in Krakow?
In 2019, Krakow was the only candidate, thus was chosen to host the 3rd edition of the European Games. The event will take place from June 21 to July 2, 2023. Apart from Krakow, the competition will also be held in other venues in Lesser Poland and Silesia regions. One of the main venues for the Games will be the Stadion Miejski im. Henryka Reymana in Krakow, where the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as matches of the rugby 7 tournament, are to be held.
Hosting the Games has become an opportunity to improve the sporting infrastructure in the city and the region. At the beginning of April 2022, the government granted Krakow central funding of PLN 141 million for investment in sports infrastructure, the largest part of which (PLN 80.1 million) will go towards the modernisation of Stadion Miejski, estimated at PLN 89 million.
What will the planned upgrade of Stadion Miejski in Krakow change?
In early summer 2022, the Sports Infrastructure Management Office (Zarząd Infrastruktury Sportowej) in Krakow announced tenders for the modernisation of the municipal stadium. Renderings by Archetus studio have also been published, showing the concept for the new external appearance of the stadium.
As part of the renovation works, the exterior of the facility is to be changed first and foremost. The interior of the stadium will also undergo renovation. The scope of work is also to include the replacement of the floodlight and sound system, the creation of connectors between the stands, a better arrangement of the spaces separating the pitch from the auditorium and the widening of the entrance to the stadium.
In order to improve the external appearance, a new facade is to be created with more glazing and lighting elements (linear luminaires, LED facade grids, LED displays). The works will also include the renovation of external steel elements as well as the surroundings of the stadium.
