King Saud University Stadium – design description

What does King Saud University Stadium look like?

King Saud University Stadium was inaugurated in May 2015 as one of the first modern, football-specific stadiums in Saudi Arabia. The facility can hold 25,000 spectators and is located on the campus of King Saud University, in the western part of Riyadh.

Between 2018 and 2020, the stadium played host to the Al-Hilal club, and since 2020 it has hosted the Al-Nassr team, which has featured the famous Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo since 2023. Between 2020 and 2023, the facility was commercially named Mrsool Park, and since 2023, the new name is in effect: Al-Awwal Park.

When were plans to expand King Saud University Stadium conceived?

In October 2023, Saudi Arabia practically secured the hosting of the 2034 World Cup. On July 31, 2024, the so-called “bid book” was published with the country's bid, which outlined, among other things, the stadiums to host the tournament. Among the 15 venues was also King Saud University Stadium (at the same time a design for its expansion was presented).

What does the King Saud University Stadium expansion plan entail?

The project involves the addition of a second floor of stands around the entire perimeter, which is expected to increase the stadium's capacity from 25,000 to more than 46,000 spectators. Since the stadium will significantly increase its dimensions, the roof and facade will be built anew, but in a form very similar to the existing one.

After the World Cup, part of the upper level of the stands will be demolished, and the capacity will be reduced to 33,000 spectators.

When will King Saud University Stadium be expanded?

The expansion of King Saud University Stadium is expected to be carried out between 2030 and 2032. The stadium is also scheduled to host matches during the 2027 Asian Cup, but at that time it will still remain in its original form – with single-tier stands holding 25,000 people.
