Ningbo Olympic Sports Center Stadium – design description

When were plans for the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center conceived?

The planning for a new, representative sports complex in Ningbo began as early as 2010. Ningbo is a large city located on the East China Sea, about 150 kilometers south of Shanghai. The city is home to one of the largest ports in the world.

The main element of the complex was to be a large stadium, but in addition to it there was to be an arena for 13,000 spectators, a training hall, an indoor swimming pool, a center for international sports exchange, and the whole was to be surrounded by recreational areas.

The complex was planned in the northwestern part of Ningbo, more than 10 kilometers from the center, on the Yao River. The selected plot of land included mostly agricultural land, but the project also required the demolition of quite a number of houses.

When was the first phase of construction of the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center realized?

The first phase of the project included the construction of sports arenas and a swimming pool. Construction of these facilities began in late 2014, and their opening took place in the summer of 2019.

The main stadium was to be built as part of the second phase – by 2020 only the area where it was to stand had been cleaned up, and an athletics track and several playing fields had been built, which were soon to be removed.

When will the main stadium at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center be built?

Construction of the main stadium began in late 2024, and the facility should be ready in four years, at the end of 2028.

A report on the construction of the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center Stadium can be seen on a separate subpage

What will the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center Stadium be like?

The new stadium will be equipped with an athletics track and will accommodate 80,000 spectators, making it among the largest stadiums in all of China. The facility will receive a sophisticated form with an elegant, decorative facade and a roof over the stands.

Symbolically, the buildings of the sports halls and swimming pool that are part of the complex are to resemble a sailing fleet, whose “flagship” will be the new stadium.
