Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park Stadium – design description
Plans to redevelop the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park Stadium were unveiled in 2024. The venue is one of the two main components of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park, which also includes an adjacent indoor arena connected to the stadium.
Construction of the complex began in 2011 and was completed in 2017. The stadium currently serves as a multi-purpose facility with an athletics track and a seating capacity of around 18,000. The arena is slightly larger, accommodating 21,000 spectators, which makes it the biggest indoor venue of its kind in China.
The redevelopment project for this relatively young stadium envisions the removal of the running track and a transformation into a football-specific layout. Work is scheduled to begin in late 2025, with construction expected to take 480 days and cost 320 million yuan.
The plan calls for lowering the pitch by approximately 4.8 metres and significantly expanding the stands, increasing the total capacity to 50,000 seats. As a result, Nanjing will gain its second large stadium – after the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center Stadium – and its first dedicated football venue.
