New National Stadium (XIV) – design description
This concept by Andrea Maffei Architects makes unusual use of regular stadium roof. Visitors can enter it through a spiraling access outside the stadium. On top they’ll find great viewing point on Tokyo, training facilities for athletics and a temporary dome for 2,000 people. The dome would be created by retractable roof that would slide away for some events, protecting fans inside the stadium itself.
The vision has been submitted in 2012 as part of international design competition for New National Stadium of Japan. It wasn’t selected as part of the 12-project shortlist, but we consider it worthy of greater attention.
Part of the requirements of Japan Sport Council was for the venue to host Olympics and World Cup final in optimum conditions. Thus the retractable seating encircling field of play and retractable roof over it.
