Allianz Arena – design description

Roof / Airbag

The roof of the Allianz Arena consists of 2,874 airbags with a total area of 64,000 square meters. It is the world's largest roof made of foil. The foil is only 0.2 mm thick and transmits up to 98% of UV rays. The cushions, each measuring 35 square meters, are made of ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, and each has a slightly different shape. Large ventilators located under the stadium pump just the right amount of air into the cushions. If the ventilator fails and water condenses in the cushion as a result of lower temperatures, a special valve opens at the lowest point of the cushion, allowing the water to be removed before the excess overloads the roof structure. If snow accumulates on the roof in winter, 12 load sensors can give a signal to increase the pressure in the cushions to balance the weight. The membranes have a self-cleaning coating and are continuously ventilated. Their weight is about 1/30 the weight of glass. The first cushions were laid on May 26, 2004, while the last one was placed before the end of the year. The Allianz Arena can be illuminated with white, red and blue lights in various shades.

Lighting details

- Each fluorescent light has an output of 58 watts and a life span of about 8,000 hours.
- Each cushion can hold a maximum of 6 light fixtures, while each fixture holds 3 fluorescent lamps, making a maximum of 18 fluorescent lamps.
- A total of 25,344 light sources have been installed.
- At once, 1,056 of the 2,874 cushions can be illuminated.
- Size of the illuminated facade: about 24,000 square meters.
- 100 kilometers of cables were used to illuminate the outer facade.
- The installation consumes 506 KWh when fully illuminated.
- Power for the entire stadium is provided by five transformers.

Seating areas

Architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron designed a completely new type of seats for the Allianz Arena, with a unique design. Their defining feature is their uniformity. In other stadiums, standard seats and box seats usually have a completely different design. All three types of seats at the Allianz Arena (standard folding seats, VIP seats and box seats) look the same, and thanks to the use of silver paint, they shimmer in different shades depending on the angle of the light. Each seat mounting point had to be marked by hand before the first one was installed. Millimeter precision was essential, as the Allianz Arena is not a rectangular stadium, but an oval. The seats are all the same size, but the distances between them are different. To install the 66,000 seats, more than 130,000 holes were drilled. The distance between the edge of the turf (measuring 105 x 68 meters) and the first row of seats is only six meters along the long side of the pitch and eight meters behind the goals.

Promenade

The main entrance to the stadium is at the promenade. It is 543 meters long and 136 meters wide and resembles a moorland - so it fits in with the neighborhood. Visitors can enter the stadium directly from the multi-story parking lot, the bus parking lot or the nearby Fröttmanning subway station. The parking lot under the promenade is Europe's largest underground parking lot, with spaces for 9800 cars. It also has designated 350 spaces for buses - 240 at the north end of the Arena and 110 at the south end.
