Hoima City Stadium – design description

How did the construction of a new stadium in Hoima come about?

In 2019, the Rujumba family decided to donate 10 acres of land on the eastern outskirts of Hoima to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) to build a new stadium in the city. The memorandum of understanding was signed on October 27, 2020.

With Uganda selected to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in September 2023 (along with Kenya and Tanzania), the construction of a new stadium in Hoima has attracted the interest of top government authorities.

The facility will stand on land previously secured by FUFA. In November 2023, the government acquired additional land (the plot will cover a total of nearly 35 acres), and in late 2023, in a televised speech, the investment was announced by the country's President Yoweri Museveni.

On behalf of the government, the investment is being led by the National Council of Sports. The stadium will be one of (most likely) three Ugandan venues prepared for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Mandela National Stadium in Kampala and the new Akii Bua Stadium in the city of Lira.

Why did the authorities choose Hoima as the site for the new stadium for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations?

Hoima is a town located in western Uganda, near Lake Albert, and is the capital of the district of the same name. At the beginning of the 21st century, large oil deposits were discovered near the city, so the region is expected to see significant development in the near future.

In 2018, construction began on Uganda's second international airport, which is being built 50 kilometers west of Hoima and is expected to open in 2025. The proximity of the airport was one of the main factors that influenced the choice of this city.

What will Hoima City Stadium be like?

The new stadium will be built on an exit road, in the eastern suburbs of Hoima. The facility will hold 20,000 spectators and will be equipped with an athletics track. The stands, which will encircle the running track, will be divided into two tiers and will be fully covered, while the exterior will feature a decorative facade.

This is the first investment in sports infrastructure in Hoima of such a large scale. The new stadium will rank among the largest and most modern in the country.

The stadium's surroundings are also to include a sports hall for 2,000 spectators, a 25-meter swimming pool, an auxiliary stadium with a training track, small playing fields, and a thousand parking spaces.

How is the construction of Hoima City Stadium progressing?

The contract to build the stadium was signed on June 7, 2024 with the Turkish company Summa, which was previously responsible for, among other things, the expansion of Stade Amahoro in neighboring Rwanda. Work began on July 1, 2024 and is expected to last 18 months (until December 31, 2025), at a cost of $129.7 million.

On March 19, 2025, the construction was visited by the country's President Yoweri Museveni, along with the First Lady, as well as the Vice President, Prime Minister and other government and sports officials. During the ceremony, a commemorative foundation stone was unveiled.

Work is progressing rapidly and it is possible that it will be completed ahead of schedule.
