Mini Romareda – design description

What is Mini Romareda?

The Mini Romareda project involves the construction of a temporary stadium for Real Zaragoza, made up of metal modular structures: four simple stands will be built on each side of the pitch, with a capacity of 20,103 spectators. The natural turf pitch will be equipped with drainage, and four light poles will be erected in the corners.

The main stand in the west will be the only one covered, and there will be some premium seating. Behind the main stand, a two-story prefabricated building will be built to house locker rooms, premises designated for referees, medics and doping control, a hospitality area, etc.

Where will the Mini Romareda be built?

The facility will stand in the northern part of Zaragoza, in place of the parking lots (Parking Norte de la Expo) located next to the Corona de Aragón athletics stadium. This is an area belonging to the Autonomous Community of Aragon, and in the past it was one of the locations considered for the construction of a new permanent stadium for Real Zaragoza.

Why will Mini Romareda be built?

The creation of the temporary stadium is related to the construction of a new stadium to stand on the site of the old La Romareda. Initially, it was assumed that the work would proceed in stages, stand by stand, so that it would be possible for Real Zaragoza to continuously play matches at the same site.

In the spring of 2024, however, the idea of building a temporary stadium, to which the club would move for the duration of the reconstruction to speed up the whole process, was born. In the end, it was this “plan B” that was decided upon.

When will the Mini Romareda be built?

Construction of the temporary stadium, nicknamed Mini Romareda, began in January 2025 and is expected to last until the end of May of that year. The club is expected to move into the facility at the start of the 2025/26 season, with the first league game expected to take place in August 2025. The stadium is to be inaugurated earlier with a match of the Spanish women's national team.

Real Zaragoza is expected to play at the temporary stadium for two seasons, 2025/26 and 2026/27 (the new La Romareda is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2027).

How much will the Mini Romareda cost?

The stadium is being built on behalf of La Nueva Romareda SL, the company primarily involved in the construction of the new La Romareda. The company was formed at the end of 2023 by three entities (the city government, the Autonomous Community of Aragon and Real Zaragoza), which are financing its activities, including the construction of the Mini Romareda.

Construction of the facility was entrusted to a consortium of companies composed of local Grupo MLN and NUSSLI Group of Switzerland. The contract is worth more than €12.75 million and includes not only the construction (construction alone is expected to cost €5.6 million), but also the maintenance of the stadium for the next two years, followed by its demolition. Also to be added to the costs associated with the construction of the Mini Romareda are nearly €2.6 million worth of site preparation work and smaller contracts.
