Spain: New Romareda, new source of revenue Fans have already bid farewell to the 'old' Romareda, and Real Zaragoza are already starting the move to a temporary stadium. Over the next two years, the historic venue will be razed to the ground and built from scratch, but the authorities are already looking for a title sponsor for the new Romareda to boost revenues.

Decision time - title sponsor and facade

After Sunday's farewell to the old Romareda, the time has come for demolition. The floodlights on the masts went first, and will be followed by the dismantling of the masts themselves, which will go to Mini Romareda - the temporary home of Real Zaragoza for the duration of the reconstruction of their home. The club’s equipment will also be moved to the other side of the city.

Meanwhile, as reported by Heraldo de Aragón, Nueva Romareda SL - the company managing the reconstruction and the future stadium - is beginning the search for a title sponsor. Although preliminary consultations are just beginning, the option to purchase the naming rights of the new Romareda by the Ibercaja bank seems particularly probable.

There is still plenty of time left before the inauguration of the new stadium - work is expected to take another two years, until June 2027. Workers are now concentrating on dismantling the mobile elements, and by September the current stadium structure will be completely demolished so that the actual construction of Real Zaragoza's new stadium can begin.

According to El Periódico de Aragón, the authorities have yet to decide what material the facade will be made of. The options are ceramic - as the more expensive option - or aluminium, which would be about €2M cheaper. Both options will be tested in the summer by setting up several slabs in the city to test their reaction to the climate and their appearance.
