Stadion an der Gellertstraße – design description
Complete redevelopment of the stadium at Gellertstraße in Chemnitz was to begin back in 2012. Designed by agn-Gruppe, the simple prefab structure provides 4 independent stands, two with terracing (ends) and two with seats (sides). All of the stadium is to have cover, while the main stand will also accommodate club offices and hospitality zones.
Initial time frame wasn’t kept at all, unfortunately. With financial and procedural delays the contractor was finally selected in mid-2013 and won despite appeals. BAM, known for many stadiums across Europe, broke ground on January 24, 2014. First phase saw the south stand being leveled, by spring also the north end gave way.
Phased development is to assure that the stadium allows gameplay at all times, providing no less than 10,000 capacity for 3. Liga games. Both end zones are to be ready for the 2014/15 season, while the west side will be replaced next. Finally, in 2015, the new east stand will be delivered.
Interestingly, the scheme makes use of the existing floodlight masts, which will be lifted by 5 meters.
