Maracanã – design description
Works on the redevelopment of this famous football temple started back in 2010 with dismantling of lower tier of seating and part of the upper one as well. As Maracana is perceived as one of Brazil’s national treasures, authorities wanted to leave as much of the old structure as possible with only remodeling stands to be closer to the pitch and widening the roof.
Single tier for over 82,000 people didn’t cause problems and was ready in mid-2012. The roof proved to be a bigger challenge as the old concrete part couldn’t support any new addition. Thus the whole cover was removed and designed from scratch, this time as cable-supported membrane structure.
Along plans the exterior changed as little as possible. All facades remained untouched with only several staircases being added to better distribute crowds.
