Stadion Miejski w Chełmie – design description
What is the project for the new Municipal Stadium in Chełm in a nutshell?
A state-of-the-art stadium is to be built in Chełm, replacing the run-down 1959 Municipal Stadium ("Stadion Miejski"). Work began in early 2025 with the demolition of the old facility, and the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
The undertaking is expected to cost nearly PLN 95 million, almost half of which is subsidized by the Ministry of Sports and Tourism, with the rest to come from the city budget. Construction work is being carried out by the Mirbud company.
The new venue will gain a compact, rectangular form, adapted for football purposes. Two stands will be built along the pitch to accommodate a total of 4,500 spectators. The entire structure will be topped by a unified roof, and a facade of vertical steel profiles will also surround the stadium behind the goals, creating the effect of a unified, enclosed body.
The project also includes the construction of three training fields – one will be located right next to the stadium, and two more in other locations. The project is intended to serve the entire region, which is why it has been named the Lubelskie Football Center ("Lubelskie Centrum Piłki Nożnej").
How did the reconstruction of the Municipal Stadium in Chełm come about?
The reconstruction of the Municipal Stadium in Chełm had been attempted for a long time, but the investment was only made possible by funding from the Ministry of Sports and Tourism. On August 31, 2022, the city applied for the subsidy, and in January 2023 it was granted – for nearly PLN 45 million, corresponding to 50% of the estimated costs (the rest was to come from the city budget).
At the beginning of 2024, a design-build tender was announced for the project. The lowest bid, from Mirbud, was for PLN 94.71 million, an amount just over PLN 6 million more than the cost estimated by the city. On April 29, city councilors decided to allocate additional funds, and in early May the tender was settled, selecting the offer from Mirbud. The contract signing took place on May 22, 2024 at the Municipal Stadium.
When was the concept for the new Municipal Stadium in Chełm presented?
The concept of the new Municipal Stadium was presented at the beginning of the reconstruction, on January 20, 2025, during the Ceremonial Session of the Chełm City Council, held at the Chełm Public Library.
What are the objectives of the reconstruction of the Municipal Stadium in Chełm?
The main goal of the project is to build a modern, football-specific venue to replace the existing Municipal Stadium on I Pułku Szwoleżerów Street. The old stadium was demolished at the start of the project, and a new facility, without an athletics track, is to be built in its place. In the process, three new training fields will also be built (one next to the stadium and two in other locations).
Thanks to the investment, Chełm will gain the second most modern football stadium in the Lubelskie Voivodeship, ranking only behind Arena Lublin.
What is the new Municipal Stadium in Chełm supposed to look like?
The stadium will receive a compact, rectangular form with two stands along the pitch. The main, reinforced concrete stand will be built on the west side and will be connected to the club building. Opposite it will be a modular stand. The capacity of the facility will be 4,500 spectators.
The stands will be entirely covered with a roof, and the facade of vertical steel profiles will also cover the space behind the goals, creating the effect of a compact, enclosed block. Four floodlight masts will be erected at the corners of the stadium – two of which will also have video screens mounted on them.
What will be in the building adjacent to the main stand at the new Municipal Stadium in Chełm?
A three-story club building with a usable area of 3,500 square meters is to be adjacent to the main stand. The upper floors will feature glass rooms overlooking the field, and the roof over this part of the facility will be placed slightly higher relative to the rest of the stadium.
- The building will accommodate:
- locker rooms and sanitary facilities
- food and beverage outlets
- a souvenir store
- deposits and ticket offices
- broadcasting stands
- media rooms
- club premises
- offices, gym, warehouses and technical facilities
- rooms for facility maintenance and security personnel
- museum of the Chełmianka club and sports in Chełm
The first floor will mainly house sports spaces (locker rooms, storerooms), the second floor will be used for lodges, a restaurant and a conference room, and the second floor will house rooms for technical services, announcers and media.
What additional tasks will be carried out in the reconstruction of the Municipal Stadium in Chełm?
Three new training fields are also to be built as part of the project, one at the Municipal Stadium and two at other locations in the city:
- The training field at the Municipal Stadium will be built as part of the reconstruction of the existing pitch. The new one, with a natural turf surface, will have dimensions of 102 × 66 m, similar to a full-size pitch , and will be equipped with artificial lighting, as well as an irrigation system
- The second training pitch is planned at Ceramiczna Street. This pitch, completed at the end of 2024, has been given an artificial turf, modest stands, floodlights and the necessary social facilities, and is to be used by the Chełmianka club to play their matches during the reconstruction of the Municipal Stadium
- a third training pitch is to be built on Stefan Batory Street, next to the Construction and Surveying School Complex. This pitch will also receive an artificial turf, and in addition it will be covered with a so-called "balloon"
The project, along with the construction of training fields, was considered important not only for Chełm, but also for the entire region, which is why it was given the name Lubelskie Football Center.
How is the implementation of the Lubelskie Football Center progressing?
