King Abdullah Economic City Stadium – design description
The design by UK-based AFL Architects draws inspiration from the corals found in the Red Sea: it incorporates organic forms and vibrant colors, and the harmony with nature is emphasized by the range of eco-friendly solutions and the emphasis on optimal use of available resources.
The main impetus for the stadium is the 2034 World Cup to be held in Saudi Arabia – the new facility is to be one of the venues for the tournament. Construction of the stadium is scheduled to take place between 2027 and 2032.
The stadium is to stand in King Abdullah Economic City – this is a planned city, the construction of which was announced in 2005. The city is located on the Red Sea, about 100 kilometers north of Jeddah. The stadium will be built near a high-speed rail station and an exit from Highway 5.
The facility will be built on a circular plan, covered with a flat roof and will be able to accommodate 45,700 spectators. A panoramic screen will be placed on the facade, and additional buildings will be built around the stadium to house retail, hotels, apartments or a sports clinic.
After the World Cup, it will be possible to dismantle the upper level of the stands, and the facility is expected to be used to host a variety of events, not only football, but also in combat sports, e-sports, as well as concerts, exhibitions or conferences.
