Mâs Monumental – design description
How does the expansion project of Mâs Monumental look in brief?
The latest renovation of Mâs Monumental focuses this time on adding an extra tier of stands and constructing a roof that will cover nearly the entire spectator area. Work is scheduled to begin in April 2026 and is expected to last three years.
The additional tier will raise the stadium’s capacity beyond 100,000 seats, reinforcing its position as the largest stadium in South America.
The expansion responds to River Plate’s needs, as the club has become a world leader in league match attendance. The renovation will also prepare the stadium for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, during which one match is scheduled to take place there.
How was the concept for the latest Mâs Monumental expansion developed?
Plans to build a roof over Estadio Monumental (commercially named Mâs Monumental since 2022) had been considered for some time, but until now the investment had not been implemented.
Between 2020 and 2024, a smaller-scale modernization was carried out, which also brought significant changes: the athletics track was removed, and a new lower tier of stands was added in its place.
This made the stadium a purely football venue, and its capacity increased to over 85,000 spectators, making it the largest stadium in South America.
Mâs Monumental is one of Argentina’s premier stadiums, regularly hosting matches of the national team. On a day-to-day basis, the stadium belongs to CA River Plate, one of the most popular football clubs in the world.
The stadium regularly fills with fans, even after the capacity increase, which has made River Plate a global leader in home league match attendance.
Consequently, the announcement of the next renovation did not take long. The stadium roof was promised during Stéfano Di Carlo’s campaign, who was elected River Plate’s new president at the end of 2025.
At the beginning of 2026, the club unveiled a new expansion project for Mâs Monumental. The concept was developed in collaboration with the German firm Schlaich Bergermann Partner (sbp), which has extensive experience in designing stadium roofs worldwide.
What does the Mâs Monumental expansion project involve?
The main goal of the Mâs Monumental expansion is to add an upper tier of stands, which will raise the stadium’s capacity to around 101,000 spectators, as well as to construct a roof that will cover nearly the entire seating area.
The roof and the new tier will be supported by external metal pillars, avoiding any interference with the existing structure of the stadium.
The new tier will feature approximately 16,000 seats in the club’s colors – white and red. All of these seats will be available to club members (socios) at no additional cost, increasing the total number of such seats from 24,000 to 40,000.
Visualizations show that under the roof there will be glassed-in boxes and two large video screens, while a viewing path is planned on the roof’s surface, similar to the one built at Tottenham’s new stadium.
When will Mâs Monumental undergo expansion?
Work will last three years, ensuring the modernized stadium is ready in time for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, during which one match is scheduled to be held at Mâs Monumental at the start of the tournament.
The investment is projected to exceed $100 million. Funding will come from loans and sponsorship agreements, including a new deal for the stadium’s naming rights.
Construction will proceed without major disruptions to stadium operations – over the three-year work period, a maximum of three matches may need to be rescheduled.
