Full roof and new seating among key upgrades

River Plate has presented plans for a major renovation of Estadio Monumental, with the centerpiece being the full roof covering the stands. The new roof structure will be supported externally, allowing nearly all seats to be sheltered while keeping the playing field open for optimal sunlight and turf conditions. The club collaborated with German firm Schlaich Bergermann Partner (SBP), a leader in stadium roof design, to develop a detailed technical plan for the project.

The renovation will also create a 360° stand, adding approximately 16,000 new seats. Notably, around 40% of these seats will be reserved for club members without extra charges. All new seats will feature the club’s colors, creating a visual effect of a 360° flag visible from any section of the stadium.

In recent years, the Monumental has undergone major changes, mainly related to bringing the stands closer to the pitch. Construction schedule and financing

Work is set to begin in April 2026, with the project expected to take 36 months. During this period, the club anticipates having to forgo a maximum of three home matches, minimizing disruption to domestic league and international fixtures.

The total cost of the project is estimated at over $100 million. Financing will come from two main sources: a long-term loan from international financial institutions with favorable repayment terms, and a new commercial contract, including the sale of stadium naming rights for the next 10 years. The approach is designed to ensure that the renovation does not impact the club’s operating budget.
