Stadion MOSiR Rybnik – design description

What is the MOSiR stadium reconstruction project in a nutshell?

Although the Rybnik stadium has undergone a number of modernizations in the 21st century, the facility requires a comprehensive reconstruction to bring it up to modern standards. The city authorities are aware of the need for decisive action, and have commissioned a competition for an architectural concept.

The competition was settled in April 2025, and the winner was the MAMGUSTA Architects studio. The plan calls for a complete reconstruction of the stadium, carried out in stages, without taking the facility out of service. The work is expected to take several years, with a possible start date of 2027.

After the reconstruction, the stadium's capacity will increase to 15,000 spectators. The new two-story stands will form a full oval around the speedway course and will be completely covered – along with the track. The reconstruction is dedicated primarily to the speedway, although the facility is expected to retain the ability to hold football games.

Why is a comprehensive modernization of the MOSiR stadium in Rybnik needed?

The Rybnik stadium was built at the end of the interwar period – the first competition was played there in June 1939. The facility can accommodate a little over 10 thousand spectators and is used primarily for two disciplines: football and speedway. The stadium has also sometimes been the venue for music concerts by world-class stars.

In the 21st century, the stadium underwent a number of renovations, including the installation of plastic seats, floodlights and pneumatic banners, the renovation of the track and the installation of heated turf. Despite this, the stadium has become increasingly out of step compared to modern football and speedway arenas, of which more and more have been built in Poland recently.

How did the concept of rebuilding the MOSiR stadium in Rybnik come about?

Rybnik Mayor Piotr Kuczera announced in May 2022 that the city intends to comprehensively modernize the facility. The city then commissioned a study to analyze various options for reconstructing the stadium.

The investment returned to public debate in March 2024 – when the speedway club KS ROW Rybnik, during a pre-season presentation of its players, presented also a video with re deringsof the rebuilt stadium. The issue was also addressed by the city authorities, who confirmed their commitment to modernizing the arena.

The city decided to organize an architectural competition for the concept of the stadium's reconstruction and commissioned the Katowice branch of the Association of Polish Architects to conduct it.

When was the competition for the concept of reconstruction of the MOSiR stadium in Rybnik held?

The competition was announced on December 16, 2024. 56 entities expressed initial interest in participating, and eventually the jury received 16 competition entries (two more were submitted after the deadline and were not considered).

The public announcement of the competition results took place on April 25, 2025 at the Rzeczna Art Gallery in Rybnik. The winner was the concept prepared by MAMGUSTA Architects from Warsaw, which, according to the jury, stood out for its lightness, elegance and compliance with the competition guidelines.

The jury awarded second prize to the work by Wenzel + Wenzel, as well as two equal distinctions (90 Architekci and ARCHiTEKT design studio) and three honorable mentions.

What does the concept for the reconstruction of the MOSiR stadium in Rybnik entail?

The plan calls for a complete reconstruction of Rybnik's stadium, after which it will receive completely new, two-level stands that will form a full oval around the speedway track – unlike the current form, in which the north side remains open. Upon completion, the stadium's capacity will increase to 15,000 seats.

A lightweight canopy will be built over the stands, covering not only the auditorium, but also the speedway track. The western stand will house a VIP area, and on the eastern side there will be an area for competitors. An extensive pavilion with offices and administrative spaces is to be adjacent to the eastern stand.

The stand on the southern curve will accommodate a wellness area and facilities for the adjacent athletics stadium. On the other side, the northern curve will house a machine park. Parking lots and technical rooms will also be built under the stands.

The stands will be shielded by a translucent facade of white slats. One of the key visual accents will also be the external slanted columns supporting the roof structure.

The stadium will retain the ability to host football matches, although the project focuses primarily on providing the best possible conditions for speedway. Ultimately, the city would like the football club to move to a separate facility dedicated exclusively to them.

When will the MOSiR stadium in Rybnik be rebuilt?

The reconstruction is to be carried out in five stages, and the facility is to remain operational throughout. The sequence of stages is as follows:

  1. western stand with VIP zone
  2. eastern stand with office and administration pavilion
  3. southern curve with renewal zone and facilities for athletes
  4. northern curve with machine park
  5. roofing of the entire stadium

The work is expected to take several years, and according to conservative estimates could begin in 2027. The cost of the project is tentatively estimated at around PLN 160 million, with divergent forecasts ranging from PLN 70 million to as much as PLN 200 million.

The success of the investment will depend on the financial capacity of the city, which will most likely have to bear the costs on its own.
