National Stadium – design description

The comprehensive redevelopment of Jamaica's National Stadium will retain only the existing main stand. The stands on the remaining sides will be demolished and rebuilt from scratch, eliminating the cycling track while adding an extensive roof.

Following the redevelopment, the stadium's capacity will increase to 37,500 spectators, with 90% of seats covered. The venue is intended to meet high standards for hosting football and athletics events.

The investment also includes the revitalization of the surrounding area, featuring new fan zones and the redevelopment of the training stadium. The plans further provide for the construction of a new sports museum.

The project is being carried out as part of a Jamaican-British partnership, with the redevelopment plans prepared by Ryder Architecture and CAA ICON. The concept was first unveiled on July 16, 2025, at the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport. Updated renderings were released on July 1, 2026.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027. The redevelopment will secure the stadium's position as Jamaica's leading sports venue for at least the next three decades.

One of the first major events to be staged at the redeveloped stadium is expected to be the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica.
