National Stadium – design description

The comprehensive modernization project of Jamaica National Stadium envisions increasing its capacity from 35,000 to 37,500 spectators, removing the concrete cycling track, and covering 90% of the seating with a roof.

The stadium’s facilities will also be upgraded, with new VIP boxes to be built, ensuring that the venue meets high standards for hosting both football and athletics events.

As part of the investment, a multi-level parking structure for 4,500 vehicles (including 1,000 VIP spaces) is planned, along with a sports museum. The stadium’s surroundings will be enhanced with additional greenery.

The project is being carried out under a Jamaican-British partnership, with the modernization plans prepared by two British firms, Ryder Architecture and CAA ICON. The concept was presented publicly for the first time on July 16, 2025, at the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026 and be completed in 2029. During the works, the stadium is expected to remain operational, although its capacity may be limited. The modernization aims to secure the stadium’s status as Jamaica’s leading sports venue for at least the next three decades.
