Suncorp Stadium – design description
How can the Suncorp Stadium modernization project be summarized?
The modernization of Suncorp Stadium is set to be the largest investment in the venue since its major redevelopment in the early 2000s. The main driver behind the renovation is the 2032 Olympic Games.
The stadium will feature Australia’s first panoramic scoreboard, while large LED screens will also be installed on its facade. Some changes will also be made to the stands, resulting in a slight increase in capacity. Works could begin as early as the end of 2026.
What is Suncorp Stadium like?
The origins of Suncorp Stadium (traditionally known as Lang Park) date back to 1914, while its current form was shaped by a complete redevelopment carried out between 2001 and 2003. The stadium is located close to Brisbane’s central business district.
Today, the venue has a capacity of 52,500 spectators and is regarded as one of Australia’s best rectangular stadiums. It hosts rugby league, rugby union, and football matches, as well as concerts and other events.
Suncorp Stadium has hosted matches in major international tournaments such as the Rugby World Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In 2032, it is set to be one of the venues for the Olympic Games in Brisbane, hosting football and rugby sevens competitions.
When were the plans for the Suncorp Stadium modernization announced?
Plans for the modernization of Suncorp Stadium were first outlined in September 2025 by Queensland Premier David Crisafulli. The main driver of the investment is the Olympic Games, although the venue would have required upgrades anyway after more than two decades since its last redevelopment.
The renovation plans were announced on 17 June 2026 in a joint statement by David Crisafulli (Premier of Queensland) and Andrew Powell (Minister responsible for sport and the Olympic Games).
What does the Suncorp Stadium modernization project include?
The stadium will receive Australia’s first panoramic scoreboard, to be installed along the roof edge. Large LED screens will also be added to the stadium facade.
Changes will also affect the stands – at both ends of the pitch (north and south), new terraced sections with bar access are planned. Other parts of the seating bowl will also include safe standing areas and new food and entertainment zones.
Overall capacity is expected to increase slightly, from the current 52,500 to around 54,000 seats.
Although the 2032 Olympic Games remain the target completion date, the works are expected to take place much earlier, with construction potentially starting as early as late 2026. The investment will be financed from the Queensland Government’s Legacy Fund.
