Investment of strategic importance
The new infrastructure will be built on the site of the former Expo north car park in Zaragoza. The area where the work will take place covers a total of as much as 155,745 square metres. The urbanisation project, promoted by the Aragon government, envisages an investment of €2.5 million including VAT. Responsibility for the project rests with the consortium formed by MSM and Urban Mater Arquitectura.
However, this is only the beginning of the expenditure. The construction of the portable stadium itself, which will replace La Romareda and accommodate 20,000 spectators, involves additional costs of more than €12 million. A joint venture made up of Nussli Iberia and Construcciones Mariano López Navarro, is responsible for realising this part, and the contract has been awarded by La Nueva Romareda. The organisation brings together key stakeholders in the project, such as the Aragon government, Zaragoza City Council and Real Zaragoza.
Real Zaragoza will play for two seasons at a temporary stadium.
Portable stadium as temporary solution
The urbanisation works will take approximately four months to complete and will include comprehensive site preparation. The project will include network installations, foundations and the surface around the facility. The construction of the portable stadium will enable the Real Zaragoza team to play matches for the next two seasons. This solution will significantly shorten the construction time of Nueva Romareda, as well as optimising the costs associated with its construction.
Nueva Romareda will be built in stages, which means that demolition of the existing stadium structures will begin in the coming summer. At the same time, it is planned to accelerate the construction of the new Gol Sur stand, a key element of the future facility.
The area earmarked for the construction of the portable stadium has been carefully selected. The location of the north Expo car park provides good accessibility by both public transport and private vehicles. In addition, the space allows for the creation of parking facilities for fans, players, officials, media and other services accompanying sporting events.
