Al-Shohada Stadium – design description
The stadium is being built in Al Sadr City (Hus the temporary name), almost in central Baghdad and with five other stadia in the vicinity. After contract signing with Turkish Nurol Construction preparatory works began in summer 2012. The project is to be delivered within 30 months, meaning a mid-2014 opening possible.
Initial renderings showed a more oval form (though still football-only), but this was later changed to a more practical rectangular form. When ready, it will be Baghdad’s largest football venue.
New stadium: Turbulent history of Al-Madina Stadium
The story behind the construction of this venue is a ready-made script for an action movie. We would be watching kidnappings, the Islamic State threat, an economic crisis and a pandemic. After many years, all the difficulties were overcome and the facility was completed.
Baghdad: First solar stadium of Iraq almost ready
Work was deadlocked for years but now is progressing rapidly. The 30,000-seater will not only be ready within weeks, it will also be Iraq's greenest stadium.
Iraq: Turkish workers released after stadium abduction
16 Turkish construction workers abducted from Al Sadr City Stadium were released unharmed. This shows how unstable situation in Iraq is, also concerning sports projects.
