Stade du Pays de Charleroi – design description

The French office Atelier Ferret won the competition to redesing Stade du Pays de Charleroi, one of the Euro 2000 venues. The building had already been downsized twice between 2000 and 2014, seeing capacity drop from 25,000 to 14,000. With limited ticket demand, the future redevelopment won’t include expansion of the stands.

However, the infrastructure on offer to supporters will vary largely from what they’ve been treated to since 2000. On the one hand, new octagonal outer form will protect local residents from excessive noise and light pollution during games. On the other hand, it will offer a modern appearance and will provide reinvented crowd management within and around the stadium. Not without merit, the striped façade can be associated with club nickname: the Zebras.

Works should last 2 years as they will be phased not to impede regular football use. Total investment should be within €12 million with own resources comprising €5 million.
