Guiyang Evergrande Football Stadium – design description

What does Guiyang stadium project mean?

Design of the new stadium in Guiyang represents a typical football venue for 80,000 spectators. Three-tier grandstands are to be built around the pitch, and the structure will be surrounded by a steel skeleton, which is at the same time a facade and roof over tribunes. A large amount of commercial space is planned to be built inside the stadium, so that facility can also be a shopping centre.

Structure of the steel columns and beams of the outer framework resemble a growing root system. Composition of the square surrounding the stadium has been designed to continue this pattern, intensifying the impression. Shell of the roof and facade is to be made of transparent material. At night, the arena is to be illuminated from the outside.

With a capacity of 80,000 spectators, the stadium will rank among the largest of its kind in China. Arena is to stand approximately 9 km northeast from the over 50,000-seat Guiyang Olympic Sports Center Stadium, which was being built between 2006 and 2010. Guizhou FC has been identified as a potential host for the new stadium. Facility is also expected to be suitable for concerts and other non-sporting events and activities.

Will the new stadium in Guiyang actually be built?

New stadium was to be built thanks to an initiative by Chinese property development giant Evergrande Group. Construction of the facility began in June 2020, with China Construction Fifth Engineering Division as the main contractor. Project was expected to cost 3.16 billion yuan to complete. However, due to Evergrande's massive financial problems, construction has been suspended and the project's further fate is uncertain.
