Mosul Olympic Stadium – design description

A new representative stadium in Mosul, the second largest (after Baghdad) city in Iraq, is to be built with funding from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The project involves the construction of a typical football stadium for 30,000 spectators, with two-tiered, fully covered stands around the pitch. The project also includes a hotel, as well as two training pitches (including one with a running track). The facility will be built in the northern part of Mosul and is to be permanently hosted by Mosul SC football club.

The construction contract was signed with a consortium of Turkish companies Tekcelik and Uzunlar, and the design was prepared by Istanbul-based studio Orion Mimarlık. The construction cost was estimated at just under $100 million. Work began in the spring of 2013. In 2014, however, Mosul was occupied by ISIS and construction stopped. The city was not fully liberated from Islamic State occupation until 2017, and the abandoned stadium construction was resumed in September 2020.
