Sportech City – design description

When was the first vision of Sportech City presented?

On March 28, 2022, the project for Sportech City, a new research and development center focused on developing technology for sport, was presented in Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla press room. Part of the center was to include a complex of training pitches. The project was prepared by the investment fund Gades Sport Technology in collaboration with the club Cádiz CF.

Where is Sportech City planned to be built?

The site chosen for the center was the Delphi car parts factory in Puerto Real (near Cádiz), which closed in 2007. Shortly before the presentation of the project, it was announced that the club had purchased the site. In the summer of 2022, the demolition of the factory began.

When was the new vision for Sportech City presented?

On October 18, 2023, a ceremony was held at the Hotel Q Cádiz Bahía, attended by, among others, LaLiga president Javier Tebas, during which a new, much more impressive vision of Sportech City was presented, prepared in collaboration with the audit and consultancy firm KPMG.

What will Sportech City be?

Sportech City is to include a research center, laboratories, a university, a coworking center, a data and user experience center, a business incubator, a medical clinic and warehouses. A football stadium with a capacity of 35,000 spectators, which can also serve as an event center, is also to be an important part of the project. From the images provided, it appears that it will be equipped with a retractable roof.

The aim of the center is to create innovation, develop technology to help athletes and those working in the sports industry, develop sports medicine, help athletes improve their performance or help various entities achieve business success in the sports market. The creation of the center is expected to give Cádiz CF access to the latest technology and knowledge to help the club constantly develop and stay ahead of the competition.

Will Cádiz CF move to a new stadium in Sportech City?

Despite plans to build a large, state-of-the-art stadium within the resort, Cádiz CF has announced that it intends to remain in Cádiz and will continue to play its matches at Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla. However, it is difficult to imagine that the club, having a new, larger stadium built with its involvement nearby, will not use it at least occasionally.

What are the costs of building Sportech City?

The cost of building Sportech City has been estimated at €371 million. Funding from the LaLiga Impulso programme is expected to help the club finance the venture, but for such a large investment, further contributions will be required from other entities that choose to participate in the project. The complex is also expected to include a commercial area and the center itself, in addition to providing knowledge and new technologies, is also expected to be profitable and provide around 2,900 new jobs.
