Stadion Miejski w Katowicach – construction description
When was the long-awaited start of work on the new stadium in Katowice?
The construction of the new GKS Katowice stadium had been planned for years, but it was not until 2020 that the city purchased the land for the future investment (the facility will be built in the area of Upadowa, Załęska Hałda and Bocheńskiego streets, near the A4 motorway exit) and announced a tender for the construction. The contract with the main contractor, the NDI consortium, was signed on 31 August 2021. The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on 14 October 2021.
What will the new GKS Katowice stadium look like?
The new stadium, designed by RS Architekci, will have single-tier, fully covered stands around the football pitch and will hold just under 15,000 spectators. The facility will be connected to a sports indoor arena with a capacity of 2,800 spectators, which will mainly be used by GKS volleyball players.
What is the construction schedule for the new stadium in Katowice?
The contractor has been given 3 years to complete the project (until August 31, 2024). The amount of the contract was around PLN 205 million (the cost later increased to PLN 268 million). The NDI Group has selected Anna-Bud as the main subcontractor responsible for the construction of all the cubature structures. The second stage of the investment, including the construction of training pitches and car parks, is planned after the completion of the stadium. Its cost was initially estimated at around PLN 42 million.
