Grand Stade de Tanger – construction description
The redevelopment of Grand Stade de Tanger began at the end of 2020. Initially, the intention was only to expand the stands on the curves and to create an attractive façade. During the construction process, the plans expanded and it was also decided to remove the athletics track, expand the lower part of the stands and change the character of the stadium to a football-specific one. A new roof over the stands is also to be built.
As the new plans have emerged, the modernization actually has two phases. The first phase saw the expansion of the stands in the curves, which were ready in early 2023, with the stadium hosting matches in the Club World Cup in February 2023. In the summer of 2023, meanwhile, the removal of the athletics track and the expansion of the stands in the lower section began. This work is expected to last until 2025.
The expanded stadium in Tangier will be one of the venues for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.
