When will the Wuxi Olympic Sports Center be built?

A new sports complex in Wuxi is being built in the southern part of the city, on the banks of Lake Tai, in an area covered with wetlands. The competition for the architectural concept of the complex was decided in 2023, and the winner was the German studio von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp).

Construction of the Wuxi Olympic Sports Center began in January 2023, and the official groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 9, 2024. The complex is expected to be ready in mid-2026, with an investment cost of 6.9 billion yuan.

What will the Wuxi Olympic Sports Center be?

The new complex will include a main stadium, plus a large sports hall for 18,000 spectators, an indoor swimming pool with an auditorium for 2,000 people, and a building with apartments for athletes, a hotel, a fitness center and commercial space. Surrounding the facilities will be a recreational park with playing fields, paths, water reservoirs and greenery. The complex will occupy a plot of 56.7 hectares.

The plan of the entire complex, as well as the appearance of the buildings, was inspired by the natural forms found in wetlands and their plants. The main stadium will be equipped with an athletics track, and will have a capacity of 60,000 spectators.
