Changsha Olympic Sports Center Stadium – construction description

A new, representative stadium in Changsha is being built in the southern part of the city, on the Xiang River waterfront, next to the under-construction bridge (Muping Xiangjiang Grand Bridge). The facility will be part of a bigger sports complex, which will also include a large sports hall and indoor swimming pool.

The large stadium will be given an oval form, with overlapping segments covering its facade and roof, creating a modern, dynamic form. The facility will accommodate 65,000 spectators, which will surpass Changsha's other major stadium, Helong Stadium, and become the largest in the province.

The interior of the stadium is to be dominated by the color red, a reference to the theme given to its concept – “red cradle”. The motif refers to Changsha's revolutionary and communist heritage. Meanwhile, the interconnected hall and swimming pool are meant to resemble a butterfly dancing over the Xiang River.

Construction was officially inaugurated on April 27, 2025, and the project is scheduled for completion in December 2028. With the construction of the new complex, local authorities hope to host the 16th Chinese National Games in Changsha, which will be held in 2029.
