Estadio Benito Villamarín – construction description
The current redevelopment of Estadio Benito Villamarín marks the final stage of an ambitious modernization plan, whose implementation began at the end of the 20th century with the expansion of the north and east stands. The next step came in 2016–2017, with the expansion of the stand behind the south goal.
Thanks to these investments, the stadium gained a more coherent, symmetrical form, although the modernization of the main stand and the construction of a roof covering the entire seating bowl were still missing to complete the concept.
The intention to finish the redevelopment was announced at the end of 2021. In 2023, an architectural competition was held, which meant that the next phase would not follow the 1998 design. The new vision was created by the architectural firms Rafael de la-Hoz and Gensler.
The plan calls for the demolition of the existing main stand and the construction of a new one, fully integrated with the rest of the stadium. The entire venue will be covered by a unified roof and complemented by a striking new facade. An integral part of the new main stand will be a cascading building attached to it from the outside.
The €70 million project began in late July 2025 with initial demolition works on the main stand. During the redevelopment, Real Betis has moved its home games to Estadio La Cartuja. The works are to last more than two years, with the planned return to the stadium scheduled for October 2027.
