Stadion Todor Diev – construction description
What does the reconstruction project for the Todor Diev Stadium in Plovdiv entail?
The architectural concept of Spartak Plovdiv stadium reconstruction can be seen on a separate subpage
The reconstruction of the Spartak Plovdiv stadium is to include the modernisation of the existing main stand on the west side and the construction of new stands on the east and north sides, including the development of the north-east corner. The stadium is also to receive lighting masts and a video screen. The capacity of the expanded facility will be 8,200 spectators.
How did the reconstruction of Spartak Plovdiv stadium come about?
The initiator of the stadium redevelopment is Spartak's president, Dinko Milenchev, who is investing his own money in the project. The activist's ambition is to restore the club's former reputation (Spartak is, among other things, the Bulgarian champion from the 1962/63 season). In 2019, the first renderings were presented, and a 35-year stadium lease agreement with the city was concluded at the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020.
How is the redevelopment of Spartak Plovdiv stadium progressing?
Construction was initiated on November 10, 2021, with Anwers - Konstrukt EOOD as the contractor. According to initial statements, the reconstruction was to be completed in the 2023/24 season, with the hope of completing the work as early as autumn 2023. Initial estimates put the cost at BGN 7.5 million. As the facility was taken out of use, the Spartak team temporarily relocated to Plovdiv Stadium.
During the first months of construction, some elements of the main stand were dismantled in preparation for further modernisation. Since work began, the assumed cost of the redevelopment has increased to around BGN 15-20 million (the amount was later refined to BGN 18.2 million), and the commissioning date was first postponed to the end of 2024 and then to December 2026.
After the initial works, the construction practically stopped and is not being continued, which casts doubts on the sincerity of the intentions of the redevelopment initiators. In 2024, information appeared that the city authorities were considering building a park in place of the Spartak stadium.
