Stadion Nowe Miasto – construction description

The stadium in the Nowe Miasto district was opened in 1926, when Wałbrzych was still part of Germany. During the communist era, the stands were expanded to a capacity of about 40,000 spectators. The stadium is known for having hosted speeches by Adolf Hitler and Lech Wałęsa.

In the 1990s, Górnik Wałbrzych moved to the Millennium Stadium. Since then, the stadium in the Nowe Miasto was no longer used regularly and gradually fell into disrepair. At the beginning of the 21st century, the eastern stand was demolished.

Revitalization of the neglected facility began to be planned as early as 2011, but then there was not enough money to carry out the renovation. The situation changed significantly in May 2022, after nearly PLN 40 million from the government's program “Polski Ład” was allocated for the modernization of the stadium.

A stadium redevelopment project was prepared and a tender was announced, which was successfully concluded on the second attempt. Moris Polska was selected as the contractor, with the contract signing and handover of the construction site taking place in October 2023. The contract was worth just under PLN 50 million, and the works were expected to take two years.

However, construction was delayed, and on May 6, 2026, the city terminated the contract with the general contractor when the project was estimated to be approximately 75% complete. The remaining works are expected to continue mainly in cooperation with the existing subcontractors, with the investment now scheduled for completion in the summer of 2027.

The plan is to preserve the existing earthen embankments, which will be protected from landslides. The spectator stand, however, will be built only in the western section and will be able to accommodate 3,000 spectators, of which about 40% of the seats are to be covered.

The stadium will receive a tartan running track and other athletic equipment, as well as floodlights, and will be adapted for the III Liga (fourth division) of the football competition. Part of the empty space left by the former east stand will be filled by a new facilities building. The project also includes a number of works in the immediate surroundings of the stadium.
