Chicago Fire FC Stadium – construction description
A new stadium for Chicago Fire FC is under construction near downtown, on an undeveloped site of a former railway yard – less than a mile west of Soldier Field, where the team currently plays its home matches.
Despite its attractive location, the area remained undeveloped for decades. In 2016, the site drew the interest of the developer Related Midwest, which prepared an ambitious plan for a new neighborhood called The 78.
The developer wanted a distinctive centerpiece for the project – something eye-catching that would enhance the appeal of the entire development. After negotiations with a number of potential partners, Chicago Fire FC showed the strongest interest and ultimately decided to locate their new stadium there.
Plans for the new venue were unveiled in June 2025. The construction cost, estimated at $750 million, will be fully covered by the club’s owner, Joe Mansueto. Construction was officially launched on March 3, 2026, and is expected to take about two years
The stadium will take the form of a rectangular structure covered by a flat steel roof. The facade, made of brick and glass, is intended to reference the traditions of the Chicago School of architecture and the city’s industrial heritage. The stands, arranged in a football-specific layout, will have a capacity of 22,000 spectators.
