Allianz Parque – construction description
Construction of the stadium in the place of its predecessor began in 2010. Interestingly, not all of the old stands were dismantled, historical northern curve was left and incorporated into the redeveloped seating layout.
For this reason stands have an unusual shape with one end stand being curved as in athletic stadiums without the venue having a track. This was a way to provide further use for the stadium as the space between pitch and viewers may be used to install a stage and with special curtain northern part of the stands may be transformed into an indoor amphitheatre for smaller events without challenging pitch quality.
Design if the stadium was done by Portuguese Tomas Taveira, thus the strong colours used on external side. Construction process was expected to last 3 years, but is delayed and April 2013 is very unlikely to remain as work deadline.
