Stadion Kraljevica – construction description
The new stadium in Zaječar will be built on the site of the former hippodrome, not far from the municipal stadium where FK Timok Zaječar footballers have played their matches so far. The new facility was to have a football-specific, rectangular layout, with a capacity of over 8,000 spectators and be very modern.
After the new facility is built, the old stadium is to be used mainly for athletics. There are plans to build a new tartan running track on it, making it one of the most important athletics facilities in eastern Serbia.
A ground-breaking ceremony was held on 29 December 2020, at which the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Vanja Udovičić, and the mayor of the city, Boško Ničić, performed the symbolic act of laying the foundation stone.
Construction of the stadium was originally scheduled to be completed at the end of 2022. WD Concord West is the main contractor and the contract value was approximately 3.38 billion Serbian dinars. The design of the facility was prepared by Centar za planiranje urbanog razvoja and Sintezis inženjering. The venue was finally opened on November 19, 2023 in the presence of many prominent officials, including the President of Serbia and the President of UEFA.
