Where is Q2 Stadium, Copa América 2024 stadium, located?
Q2 Stadium is Austin's (a city in Texas) first typical football venue. Austin City Limits, Sound on Sound, Austin Urban Music are just a few of the many music festivals that take place right here in the city and attract thousands of people from all over the world. There's a reason the city is called the music capital of the world.
What does Copa América 2024 stadium in Austin look like?
The venue features two-tiered stands that are entirely covered by a roof. To prevent the problems that hot weather would cause for players as well as spectators, the stadium is designed to allow free, natural airflow, thus cooling the arena. The south stand is unique in relation to the others in that it has standing room only and is single storey, which also makes it steeper.
The stadium is distinguished by its large number of business spaces, but also by its sustainable model. Indeed, it has been awarded the LEED Gold certificate, which recognises the most environmentally friendly projects. Q2 Stadium is unique in its reduction of water consumption and so-called light pollution.
What is the history of Q2 Stadium, Copa América 2024 stadium?
In 2020, the Austin FC football club was founded in the city of Austin, Texas. From the inception of plans to establish the team in 2019, it was clear that it would need a stadium to match the MLS, which it was due to join in 2021, and so it did.
Worth initially $241m and eventually $260m, Gensler's project was completed in a year and a half, between September 2019 and May 2021. The timing of the construction fell during the pandemic period, which made the work more difficult and expensive. The first match played at Q2 Stadium was a friendly between the US and Nigerian women's national teams on 16 June 2021, followed by Austin FC's first run onto the pitch three days later.
The stadium also played host to the US national team during their qualification for the World Cup in Qatar, and was also the semi-final arena for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In the semi-final, the US national team defeated invitee Qatar 1:0, paving the way to the final, which they won, beating Mexico 1:0.
