What does the Copa América 2024 stadium in Glendale look like?
Architecturally, State Farm Stadium is known for its movable roof and an outdoor retractable natural grass field, which sets it apart from other sports stadiums. The roof, made of transparent Bird-Air fabric, can open and close in about 12 minutes, allowing the stadium to host events in a variety of weather conditions.
The pitch can be moved outside the stadium on 546 steel wheels running on 13 tracks, providing the grass with the right amount of sunlight. The stadium has a permanent seating capacity of 63,400, which can be expanded to more than 73,000 during major events such as the Super Bowl or NCAA Final Four.
What is the history of State Farm Stadium, the Copa América 2024 stadium?
State Farm Stadium, located in Glendale, Arizona, opened on 1 August 2006 after three years of construction. Its design was done by Eisenman Architects and HOK Sports (now Populous).
Prior to the opening of State Farm Stadium, the Arizona Cardinals played their games at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, on the campus of Arizona State University. However, the need for a state-of-the-art stadium led to a search for a new location, and Glendale was chosen for its infrastructure and ample parking. The cost of construction was $455 million, with $302.3 million from the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority, $143.2 million from the Arizona Cardinals and $9.5 million from the City of Glendale.
State Farm Stadium plays an important role as a venue for a variety of sporting and cultural events, including the Super Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, NCAA Final Four and concerts and other events.
