Where is MetLife Stadium, the stadium of Copa América 2024, located?
The modern, multi-purpose stadium, which primarily serves as home to the NFL teams, the New York Giants and the New York Jets, is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It opened in April 2010, replacing the old Giants Stadium. Although East Rutherford is best known for its Meadowlands sports complex, which includes MetLife Stadium, it also has other attractions. It is home to the American Dream shopping and entertainment centre, one of the largest of its kind in the United States.
What does the Copa América 2024 stadium in New Jersey look like?
MetLife Stadium can hold 82,500 spectators, making it one of the largest stadiums in the NFL. Its design is distinguished by the use of neutral tones on the facade, allowing its colours to dynamically change to match the home team's colours - blue for the Giants or green for the Jets. This dynamic lighting is a distinctive element that visually integrates the stadium with the teams' branding.
What is the history of MetLife Stadium, the Copa América 2024 stadium?
As Giants Stadium approached its 30th year of existence, it became one of the oldest venues in the NFL. The Jets, previously tenants of the arena, sought to build a new West Side stadium in Manhattan. This stadium was originally intended to hold 85,000 spectators and be the main arena for New York's bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics. However, there were plans to reduce its capacity to 75,000 seats for the Jets team.
The project would have required significant public funding, but it was put on hold in 2005 due to opposition from a number of entities, including Cablevision, then owner of nearby Madison Square Garden. As a result, the Jets partnered with the Giants to jointly build a new stadium in which both teams would have an equal stake.
