Where is SoFi Stadium, Copa América 2024 stadium, located?
SoFi Stadium is located in the suburbs of Los Angeles in Inglewood, California. The venue, capable of accommodating 70,240 spectators, opened in 2020 and serves as the home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers of the NFL, as well as the annual LA Bowl college football games. The stadium is part of Hollywood Park, an urban district developed on the site of a former horse racing track.
What does Copa América stadium in Los Angeles look like?
Designed by HKS, the SoFi complex includes the stadium itself, a pedestrian promenade, and a performance venue. Above the stadium, there is an independently supported semi-translucent canopy that covers the stadium itself, an adjacent pedestrian plaza, and an attached performance venue. The canopy, spanning over a million square feet, consists of 302 panels, 46 of which can be opened to provide ventilation. Completing the structure are intricately sculpted terraces leading to the seating area, resembling semi-open gardens. The main stadium structure touches the ground only at the corners. The canopy houses 27,000 integrated LED modules capable of displaying images and videos, visible even from airplanes flying into Los Angeles International Airport.
What is the history of SoFi Stadium, Copa América 2024 stadium?
Los Angeles had been without an NFL team since 1995, making it the most lucrative market to tap into. Changes began in 2014 when billionaire Stan Kroenke purchased part of the land at the closed Hollywood Park horse racing track. A massive complex was planned, centered around an NFL stadium. Due to the proximity to LAX, the Federal Aviation Administration imposed several requirements. The height of the stadium was limited, necessitating digging into the ground to accommodate the planned seating capacity. Additionally, Kroenke had to pay $29 million for new equipment to reinforce airport radars.
The stadium was completed in 2020 and immediately became the most expensive in history, costing $3.4 billion, with the surrounding infrastructure bringing the total to $5.5 billion.
