Where is Bank of America Stadium, the Copa América 2024 stadium, located?
Bank of America Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium located on a 33-acre site in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is home to the Carolina Panthers of the NFL and Charlotte FC of the MLS teams. Known as the 'Queen City', the city is the largest in the state and one of the fastest growing in the US. It is named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III. The city is also an important financial centre, being the second largest banking centre in the US, just behind New York, with the headquarters of giants such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo.
What does the Copa América stadium in Charlotte look like?
The facility can hold 74,867 spectators and resembles a fortress thanks to its massive arches, domed towers, striking black façade and three huge main entrances. Each is guarded by a pair of huge bronze panthers. The masterpiece is completed by the domes atop the entrance towers, which create spectacular light shows during the evening games.
What is the history of Bank of America Stadium, the Copa América 2024 stadium?
On April 22, 1994, construction work began. During construction, fans were able to purchase private seat licences and the huge interest was one of the factors that led to the Carolina Panthers being included in the NFL league. During the first few seasons, the stadium was considered state-of-the-art, so it received only minor improvements over the years. In 2007, the original scoreboards, video boards and displays from 1996 were replaced with Diamond Vision video boards.
In early 2013, a $250m renovation of the stadium was proposed. This plan included, among other things, two sets of new scoreboards, escalators, infrastructure and arena improvements. This investment was completed between 2014 and 2016 and is the most significant in the venue's entire history.
