Xiangyang Olympic Sports Center Stadium – stadium description

When was Xiangyang Olympic Sports Center Stadium built?

Construction of the modern stadium in Xiangyang began in early 2021. The arena was designed by the Zhongnan Architectural Design Institute, and the contractor was China Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau. The facility was ready for use in spring 2024.

The first major event at the new stadium did not take place until April 3, 2025, when it hosted a concert as part of the Dream China Music Gala series.

Where is Xiangyang Olympic Sports Center Stadium located?

The stadium is situated on the eastern outskirts of Xiangyang, as part of the intensive urban development of the area known as Dongjin New District. Approximately 4 km from the stadium is a high-speed rail station that opened in 2019.

What are the main features of Xiangyang Olympic Sports Center Stadium?

The stadium is multi-purpose and features an athletics track, with seating for 30,000 spectators. The stands along the pitch are two-tiered, with two large screens installed on the curved sections.

The roof above the stands, mostly made of white membrane, integrates with the stadium’s distinctive external facade. The structure has a dynamic, ribbon-like form that wraps around the stands, leaving only the southern side open.

One of the “arms” of the roof extends to connect the stadium with the fitness center building. This building has an oval shape and contains multiple sports halls for a variety of disciplines, including badminton, basketball, table tennis, and fencing.

The avant-garde design of the stadium and fitness center is intended to symbolize the landscape around Xiangyang, including the Han River and nearby mountains. The shapes of the structures were also inspired by the traditional Chinese ruyi motif.

The exterior walls feature diamond-shaped patterns, which are echoed in the interior design. The facades are especially impressive when lit up at night.

The complex is complemented by small courts, paths, and green areas surrounding the main facilities. The entire site is called Xiangyang Olympic Sports Center (until May 2025, it was known as Xiangyang National Sports Center).
