How was the Hechuan District Sports Center built?

The investor, contractor and later also the operator of the Hechuan District Sports Center is the China Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau. The main impetus for the construction of the new sports complex was the intention to hold the 7th Chongqing City Games in Hechuan. The cost of building the entire complex was 1.5 billion yuan.

Hechuan is a former city with a long history, now formally part of Chongqing, although it is located at a considerable distance (about 80 kilometers northwest) from its center.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 20, 2022, and the complex was practically ready in March 2024, and passed inspection procedures in April. On May 8, 2024, the sports hall hosted the first competition (badminton tournament), held as part of the 7th Chongqing City Paralympic Games. The official inauguration of the entire complex took place on June 18, 2024.

The main event for which the complex was built, the 7th Chongqing City Games (combined with the 7th Chongqing City Paralympic Games), was held from March to September 2024, although the main part of the event fell in September. The opening ceremony took place on September 20, 2024 at the Hechuan District Sports Center Stadium and the closing ceremony was held on September 29 in the hall of the complex.

What is the Hechuan District Sports Center?

The Hechuan District Sports Center is a sports complex that primarily consists of a multi-purpose stadium with a capacity of more than 20,000 spectators, as well as a sports hall with a capacity of 8521 people and an indoor swimming pool with an audience of 1500. The complex also includes a training athletics track or shopping center. The facilities are surrounded by greenery and numerous paths.

Attention is drawn to the original, irregular form of the sports hall, which is covered with 7288 metal panels. The hall's shape is meant to symbolically refer to the three rivers that converge in Hechuan (Jialing, Fu and Qu). A similar, though somewhat less extravagant, form was also given to the indoor swimming pool.

What does the stadium at the Hechuan District Sports Center look like?

The main component of the Hechuan District Sports Center is a multi-purpose stadium that can accommodate 20,455 spectators. The facility is equipped with an athletics track, which is surrounded by a ring of stands. The main stand has a second tier and a small covered VIP box.

The stands are equipped with plastic seats in green, blue and white, which mix together to form a colorful mosaic with a predominance of green. Four distinctive floodlight towers stand behind the corners, and a large video screen is mounted on one of the curves.
