Hongkou Stadium – stadium description
First stadium in the Hongkou district was built in 1955 and was a typical athletic stadium with a football field inside. It wasn’t until 1999 that the old structure was replaced by the new one, which also became mainland China’s first ever football-specific stadium. The athletic use was transferred to larger Shanghai Stadium, which coincidentally has the shape similar to this smaller stadium.
Once finished, the new football stadium became the home to Shanghai Shenhua, one of China’s most famous clubs. In 2007 it was also one of the venues for FIFA Women’s World Cup, it’s also used for concerts on various occasions.
Its stands hold roughly 33,000 people on two levels of regular seating, but there are also numerous rooms overlooking the pitch, particularly behind goals. Among them are 47 skyboxes in two sizes.
