Xiong’an Sports Center Stadium – stadium description
How can Xiong’an Sports Center Stadium be briefly described?
The modern Xiong’an Sports Center was developed as a flagship sports complex for the futuristic, purpose-built city of Xiong’an, located more than 100 km south of Beijing.
The complex consists of an indoor sports hall and a swimming pool, but its main venue is a multi-purpose stadium with a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators. The high-quality sports facilities are distinguished by expressive architecture with complex geometry, inspired by traditional Chinese forms.
Construction began in February 2022, following the demolition of an existing village on the site and the relocation of its residents. The entire complex was officially opened on 30 March 2025.
How was Xiong’an Sports Center Stadium developed?
On 1 April 2017, the plan to build the futuristic city of Xiong’an was announced. The new city is to be developed approximately 50 km east of Baoding and 120 km south of Beijing. It is intended to embrace new technologies, be well connected to nearby metropolitan areas, and serve as a location for selected government agencies and state-owned enterprises.
A representative sports complex was a key element of the planning of the new city. The winning design, developed by the Shanghai Architectural Design and Research Institute, was announced in November 2021.
The new sports complex was planned on the site of the former village of Luohe. Its residents, like those of many other settlements cleared for the development of Xiong’an, were relocated to new housing, while the village itself was demolished between 2019 and 2020.
Construction of the facility began in February 2022, with Beijing Urban Construction Group acting as the main contractor. Under the initial schedule, works were expected to be completed by the end of 2023, but the project was delayed, and the facilities were not finished until spring 2025. The total cost of the project exceeded 2.5 billion yuan.
The new complex was officially opened on 30 March 2025. The first sporting event took place in the indoor sports hall, which hosted a women’s basketball tournament. The stadium itself held its inaugural competitions between 1 and 5 May 2025, when it hosted a youth football tournament featuring international teams.

What does Xiong’an Sports Center Stadium look like?
The stadium is the main element of the Xiong’an Sports Center complex, which also includes two other large venues – a 10,000-seat indoor sports hall and a swimming pool with a capacity of 2,000 spectators. The facility is complemented by training areas, as well as a carefully designed layout of plazas, paths, roads, and green spaces.
The stadium has a multi-purpose character. It is equipped with an athletics track, around which a two-tier stand accommodating 30,000 spectators has been built. The stands feature foldable seating in shades of red, while two large video screens are located on the curves.
The structure features distinctive architecture with complex geometry, drawing inspiration from ancient Chinese buildings. Despite the oval configuration of the stands, the overall building footprint is close to a rectangular shape. Attention is drawn to the elegant facade, whose rhythm is defined by horizontal lines.
The structure is crowned by a vast roof with a large circular opening in the center, partially filled with glazed elements to provide cover for all seating areas. The roof also extends over an external viewing terrace that runs around the entire stadium.
The sports hall and swimming pool buildings are designed in a style consistent with the stadium, combining a contemporary architectural language with traditional motifs. The rectangular forms of the three main venues are intended to evoke the shape of traditional Chinese seals.
