Estadio Antonio Lorenzo Cuevas – historical stadium description

The stadium in Marbella was inaugurated in 1975, and its original namesake was the Francoist politician José Utrera Molina. The venue was located close to the city centre. It was a rather modest facility – the stands could accommodate 7,300 spectators, and it featured a six-lane, 375-metre tartan athletics track.

The former tenant of the ground was Club Atlético Marbella, which, before going bankrupt in 1997, played at the second tier of Spanish football between 1992 and 1996. After CA Marbella’s dissolution, it was replaced by a new club – Marbella FC (known as Unión Deportiva Marbella until 2013).

The stadium also hosted friendly club tournaments such as the Marbella Cup, Trofeo Ciudad de Marbella and Football Impact Cup. In the 1980s and 1990s, it served as a concert venue for international stars like Queen, Michael Jackson, Prince and Dire Straits.

In 2019, the stadium was renamed after Antonio Lorenzo Cuevas, the first professional footballer born in Marbella.

On 23 May 2021, during a match played at the venue, part of the stands collapsed, causing minor injuries to two spectators. As a result, the stadium was closed by the local authorities.

It was never brought back into use – on 13 August 2025, demolition began in connection with the plans to build a new, football-specific stadium with a capacity of 10,000 seats on the same site.
