Stadium Shah Alam – historical stadium description

Work on the construction of a large stadium in Shah Alam (western part of the Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area) began in 1991. Over the next three years, according to a design by renowned Malaysian architect Hijjaz Kasturi, a facility with a roof based on what was then the largest arch in the world was built here.

Due to its size, the stadium dominated the landscape of the low-rise neighborhood, and its stands, partially dug into the ground, could accommodate the largest number of spectators in the country until the opening of the new national stadium in Bukit Jalil.

The stadium was used on a daily basis by Selangor FA, one of the most popular teams in Asia. However, due to its size and relatively modern infrastructure, Shah Alam often hosted the Malaysian national team and the finals of national competitions, which were later moved to a newer and larger facility.

Approximately 5,500 cars could be parked around the stadium. There was a race track in the southwest and an arena in the southeast.

The technical condition of the stadium deteriorated rapidly in the second decade of the 21st century. Metal elements rusted, the roof covering became increasingly defective, and to make matters worse, the facility was hit by floods several times.

Attempts were made to remedy the situation by undertaking ad hoc repairs and modernization. Despite this, since 2016, Selangor FC had to temporarily move to other facilities, and in 2020, the stadium was permanently closed pending comprehensive modernization.

Demolition of the facility began in early 2024 and was completed at the beginning of the following year. A completely new stadium is to be built in place of the old one – it is to be a modern football facility with stands for 45,000 spectators and a full roof.

The new stadium was designed by the renowned Populous studio, and the site was handed over to the contractor in May 2025. The new Shah Alam Stadium should be ready in 2026, and work on the entire sports complex around it is expected to be completed in 2029.
