Tammelan stadion – historical stadium description
The decision to build a football stadium in the Tammela district was made back in 1926, but due to the ongoing recession, work was not brought to completion until 1931. For 34 years it remained the most important sports facility in the city, until the opening of the much larger Ratina Stadium.
The stadium took its final shape in 1993, when stands on a lightweight steel structure were built. Most impressive was the covered north stand, which served as the main stand. On either side of this stand were additional features, such as a VIP pavilion and an open bar. All other sectors were simple 8-row modular structures, equipped with wooden benches.
Several teams used the facility, including the Ilves men's and women's teams, as well as TPV and Tampere United. With a natural surface, this meant an extremely heavy load on the field.
On October 31, 2020, the last game was played in the old stadium. In the spring of 2021, its demolition began. Subsequently, a brand new, much larger and more modern Tammelan Stadium, inaugurated in 2024, was built on the same site.
