Stadion Ruchu Radzionków – historical stadium description
In Spring 1970 construction of Ruch Radzionkow’s stadium started on the current site in Stroszek, Bytom (interestingly, the site is not in Radzionkow). Estimated costs stood at app. PLN9 mln, of which half was donated by regional authorities and the other half by local industries.
Official opening of the 16-acre site took place on June 16th 1973 and was one of the most important events in club history with a long list of officials in attendance, including the Mining and Energetics Minister and regional governor.
Owned by the football team for many years, the stadium fell victim of Ruch Radzionków's financial issues and was eventually auctioned to a private owner in 2015. The investor decided not to extend the football use, allowing Ruch to play only a couple more seasons, during which a relocation venue was to be found.
That period ended after the 2017/18, ironically at the very moment when Ruch was regaining pace and winning promotion to the 4th tier against fierce rivals Polonia Bytom. The very last game, play-off derby against Polonia, took place on June 20, 2018, while demolition of the ground began on July 3. The stadium was decided to be replaced by residential buildings.
