Estadio El Sadar – historical stadium description

The ground was opened in 1967 and could then hold some 30,000 people. As time passed, though, this number was decreasing even despite adding another tier to the main stand in 1989. The cause is rather obvious – first bare concrete was replaced by benches and then by individual seats, all consuming initial space.

Since 1998 Estadio El Sadar was subject to constant renovations with offices, restaurant, club shop and press spaces created one after another. Largest changes since the 1989 reconstruction came, though, in 2003. Then it was converted into all-seater, pitch was moved up for better sightlines, tall fences dismantled, new giant screens installed and more rooms for various uses opened below the terracing.

In 2005 the venue was part of an unusual naming rights deal in which regional authorities of Navarra bought the naming rights, making the name sound Estadio Reyno de Navarra.
