Råsunda – historical stadium description
Although football (and other sports) was played here since 1910, the ground was opened in 1937, initially with single tiers around the pitch and second ones along the sides. As years went by it started growing, very literally, as the end zones reached a significant height. Peak capacity exceeded 50,000 in 1960’s.
From the beginning it was home to AIK Solna, but also Swedish national team (which played many games in Goteborg as well, though). But football history goes beyond that with Rasunda being world’s first stadium to host World Cup finals fort both male (1958) and female (1995) tournaments, not forgetting about Euro 1992 that was also played here.
In 2006 plans to build a new national stadium in Solna were presented. Rasunda has been sold in 2009 on condition that it remains operable until the new venue starts hosting football. Final game was the Sweden-Brazil friendly of August 15 2012, symbolically resembling the 1958 World Cup final between those teams.
